Laps, splits and what the numbers mean

  1. Start with the button or the space bar. The big digits are hours, minutes and seconds; the small amber pair is hundredths.
  2. Press Lap each time a lap, rep or section ends. The line under the main time shows the lap in progress.
  3. Stop, then export. Copy the laps as text, or download a CSV file that opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.

A lap time is the time since the previous lap press. The total (also called the split) is the running time at the moment of the press. With two or more laps of different length, the fastest is marked green and the slowest red, and the average is the total divided by the number of laps. The CSV has both readable times and plain seconds, so a spreadsheet can chart them without any reformatting.

Time is measured from the clock, so the stopwatch stays exact in a background tab and even carries on after a reload or a browser restart, because the start moment is kept in this browser's storage. Your own reaction on the button adds far more uncertainty than the clock does, so for close finishes press the same way at the start and the end.

Questions

Does the stopwatch keep running if I close the tab?

It keeps the moment you pressed Start in your browser's local storage. Open the page again and the elapsed time and laps are still there, as long as you did not clear site data or use a private window.

How many laps can I record?

Up to 999, which covers a long track session or a full day of timing tasks. The list scrolls, and the CSV export always includes every lap.

Can I use it for a race with several runners?

Yes: press Lap as each runner crosses the line, and the total column gives each finishing time. Lap times then show the gaps between runners.
