How the Pomodoro cycle works

  1. Pick one task and type it in if you like, so it shows on the display.
  2. Focus until the sound. If something else comes to mind, note it down for later instead of switching.
  3. Take the break away from the screen. After the fourth focus session the break is longer, and the cycle starts again.

The method was developed by Francesco Cirillo, who named it after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used as a student. Its traditional lengths are a 25-minute session, a short break of a few minutes and a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes after four sessions. Those numbers are a starting point rather than a rule: 50/10 suits long writing or coding stretches, and shorter sessions help on low-energy days.

The lamps on the display show where you are in the cycle. Completed focus sessions are added to today's tally, which stays on this device and starts afresh each day. Skipping a focus session moves on without counting it. With automatic start on, each session begins exactly when the previous one ends, even if this tab was in the background.

Questions

Why 25 minutes?

It is long enough to get real work done and short enough that the next break always feels close. If you keep stopping mid-thought, try longer sessions; if your attention fades, try shorter ones.

What happens if I pause?

The session stops with its time intact and continues when you press Resume. Use Restart to begin the current session again from its full length.

Is my tally sent anywhere?

No. The tally, your task name and your settings are saved only in this browser's local storage. Clear tally removes today's count.
